Mi Mundo Adorado (Audible Audio Edition) Sonia Sotomayor Eva Ibarzábal traductora Gabriela Ramirez Audible Studios Books Reviews
I am enjoying this book so much. Sonia Sotomayor's life holds many of the same memories I have growing up. Sharing so many of the same memories makes the book more readable for a person whose second language is Spanish.
This was missing a variety of chapters and i got refunded completly and got to keep this item but i was very dissapointed at thw fact it wasnt complete
Although affirmative action, essentially choked off by the Roberts Court in the Fisher v. Texas case, put this promising young woman through Princeton, where she helped found a Latino students organization, Justice Alito visibly cringes when she (or other women)speak up for the Court Sonia Sotomayor is the best living case there today for affirmative action. She spars with Scalia and takes him down round after round. But this is not what the book is about. Rather, it's about a young girl growing up in the Bronx, having a special bond with her brother Juan Luís, whom she calls "Junior," because he is the namesake of her father. SHe starts with the horror of realizing that her mother hadn't the time or the energy to do this and shows the side of juvenile diabetes that most of us never seeThe dedication of her mother to ensure their better education than was allowed in a deeply segregated and largely poor south Bronx. Her descriptions of Puerto Rico in the early 1960s paints a colorful array of animals , family members and of the blueness of the beach. The sad story of her brilliant cousin Nelson and his descent into drugs and her playfulness, garrulousness, and poignancy will make any reader feel that she is indeed a stand-out Justice. She stops the story when she goes to Federal District Court, and I'm sure one day that the world will know her full story, but for now she has to show some "judicial restraint." She has appeared on Sesame Street, she lives in a nice building in an slightly edgy DC neighborhood, but she knows all the people in he building and the pizza joint's staff, and seems to have really bonded to people.I believe that this woman fulfills Thomas Jefferson's desire that future generations see the Constitution as a living document, and that she is a walking , talking, thinking metonym for AMerica.
As others have noted, the audiobook in Spanish comes with just half of the book. The case says "Two CDs" but it comes with only 1 CD so you only get to hear the second part of the book. I returned it but the replacement audiobook I received was also only the second CD. Que lastima! The reader speaks clearly and not too fast and it was helpful to practice my Spanish listening comprehension.
I chose this book to improve my Spanish and it was a lot of work but rewarding. She is an admirable person, humble, appreciative, persevering, hard working and mature and professional.
Hardcover book with a book sleeve at this price is a good buy. Needed it for school but also a good read about Sonia Sotomayor’s life and educational career.
I am not fluent enough to write a review in Spanish but this was an amazing book. Judge Sotomayor has provided a wonderful biography that is filled with both hope and suffering. It seems that anytime she hit a crisis in her life, she took the high road and figured out what was best for her and even more importantly the society she serves. Her devotion to her family as well as her job was related in stories that made sense to all.
The book is written for everyone not just those involved in the legal profession. It is her stories(history) as they unfold in Catholic schools, with her abulita and mother, her legal journey and relationships that she shares. Celebremos!
